1. The Medieval Charm of Andraz Castle
A short distance from Arabba, nestled in a fairytale woodland landscape, lies the Andraz Castle. Built around the year 1000 on a huge erratic boulder that had tumbled down into the valley during the last ice age, it is considered the highest castle in Italy, overlooking the valley from an altitude of over 1,700 metres. This imposing medieval fortress controlled the historic trade routes between the Agordino and Val Pusteria. The famous the philosopher, astronomer and bishop Niccolò Cusano. Today, thanks to careful restoration, the castle offers an immersive experience of medieval history in the Dolomites.
2. The Memory of the Twentieth Century: The Great War Museum at the Pordoi Pass
To gain a thorough understanding of the recent history of these mountains, a visit to 1915–1918 Dolomites Museum at the Pordoi Pass is essential. Located in the building next to the departure station of the Sass Pordo cable carThis 450-square-metre exhibition space houses over 3,000 war artefacts.
Curated by’Col di Lana Historical and Cultural Association, The permanent exhibition documents the fierce high-altitude fighting on Col di Lana and the Marmolada. Through faithful reconstructions of barracks and trenches, combined with a display of original uniforms and moving handcrafted items made by the soldiers, the museum offers a poignant reflection on the events of the First World War.
3. The Roots of the Region: Fodom Ladin Museum
To discover the true spirit of our valley, we recommend a visit to the Museum of History, Customs and Traditions of the Ladin People (Fodom Ladin Museum), located in the Cesa de la Cultura Fodoma in Parish Church of Livinallongo. The exhibition is divided into several thematic sections that explore:
* Civil society, the enclosed farmstead and the traditional Ladin family structure.
* The local economy, ranging from mountain farming to crafts involving wood, wool and iron.
* The rich flora, fauna and geology of the Dolomite region.
* Local history, from the earliest settlements to the major events of the 20th century.
